Shirin Alavi Architects designed the refurbishment, single storey side extension and loft conversion of this 1950s detached bungalow in a residential area of Brighton, East Sussex. The site is on a hill with spectacular views to the South Downs and the coast. Overcoming the physical constraints of a rather dark and introverted bungalow, our design strategy sought to create a spacious and light-filled two-storey home. We have maximised the stunning views and fulfilled the client’s changing needs, accommodating their grandchildren, art and antiques.

Opening up and enlarging the entrance hall makes a dramatic difference to the first impression and experience on entering. A new staircase to the loft conversion opens the space, and roof lights in the main roof above now flood this ground floor hall with light, as well as introducing new views. On the ground floor, the defective roof of a previously added extension was demolished to introduce new roof lights and a consistent ceiling line. The new single storey side extension has increased the size of an existing bedroom, adding an en-suite and enlarging the existing bathroom. The loft conversion has created two additional double bedrooms, a bathroom and storage, adding great value to the house.
